History behind the design

In the Middle Ages, plots of land used for subsistence gardening and small-scale farming grew into gardens of sanctuary - a retreat from the horrors of the wilderness outside. Lady's chambers overlooked arbours, flowery meads and turf seats planted with aromatic herbs and jewel-like flowers - daisies, strawberries and violets.

Higher members of the gentry such as abbots, bishops or kings would have a larger pleasure park or "pleasance", usually planted with trees and wild creatures living in it.

Romantic enclosed gardens of delight inspired poetry and artists and can be seen in delicate paintings and detailed tapestries of medieval times.
